Sunborn

As a child, I always enjoyed spending time playing outdoors. In my adult life, indulging in the solace of nature has become a necessity for my own sanity. Every moment I spend in a natural setting helps to heighten my awareness of the connectivity between the earth and my physical and mental self. By imposing images from nature with my own body, I am able to explore the intimacy of this connection. The process of creating a cyanotype utilizes UV rays from the sun to develop the image, thus enhancing the relationship.

BFA Thesis

Growing up in south Louisiana, my search for identity has led me to reject many ideas my culture seems to value, such as religious affiliation, familial obligations, and the pressure to succumb to a domestic lifestyle that so many of my peers have chosen. As my journey for identity continues, I am led to wonder whether these expectations stem from my cultural upbringing or if they are, in fact, self-imposed, thus creating further emotional turmoil. My works reflect a constant internal struggle faced while making these decisions as well as a look at the conflicting mindset I find myself in.

My work is an ongoing study of the human body. I have always held great interest in the way it moves and interacts with other bodies, objects, or atmospheres. Drawing from both reality and personal fictional narratives, I choose which of these relationships warrants further investigation. Through these works, I wish to seek a better understanding of human emotions and their influences.
